First-half goals from Destiny Ashadi and Martins Usule handed Katina United their 26th game without defeat as they beat Akwa United 2 – 0 in a rescheduled matchday 11 decided at the Muhammadu Dikko Stadium in Katsina
Katsina United shot to sixth position on the back of this vital victory as they have amassed 20 points from 14 games, while Akwa United still sit comfortably in second position with 23 points picked from 13 games.
The first clear chance of the game fell to Ashadi, whose low strike from about 20 yards out went inches away from the goal just five minutes into the action.
Martins Usule broke the deadlock for Katsina United with a textbook header after he connected well a clever cross into the box by Faisal Sani to give the hosts an early lead.
The trio of Usman Baru, Lukman Muhammed and Destiny Ashadi controlled and dictated the pace of the game with crisp passes and dazzling skills in the middle of the park and put the opposition midfielder like Ifeanyi Ifeanyi and Christopher Lolo on the back foot as the hosts continued to enjoy better possession of the game.
Lukman Muhammed would then be substituted after he suffered a knee injury with Yushau Garba taking his place.
Ifeanyi Ifeanyi’s free-kick that could have leveled things up for the visitors came off the wall mounted by Yinka David.
Ashadi will then double the advantage of the hosts on 34th minutes with a well-taken right-footed strike as Katsina United went to the break two goals up.
On resumption, Akwa United came out like a house on fire as they looked more co-ordinated and sharp in the attack and almost pulled a goal back on 50th minutes as Christian Pyagbara’s long range strike went inches from goal.
The second half was a mere formality as it produced no goal and it ended 2 – 0 in favour of the hosts.
Destiny Ashadi was voted Man of the Match by the press in the stadium.
