The Super Eagles have a new star, Amkar Perm defender Brian Idowu.
It’s been a problem position for the Super Eagles for years, with a number of players trying to fill the left full back role including the likes of Ifeanyi Udeze, Taye Taiwo, Elderson Echiejille and even Juwon Osaniwa.
For the World Cup in 2014, it seemed Stephen Keshi had solved the problem with Juwon Osaniwa, who’s performances in Brazil impressed so much.
Flash forward, during the 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, and the criticism reigns in, with a lot aimed especially at Elderson Echiejille.
A move to Cercle Brugge followed, Echiejille was out in the cold, with Idowu now the number one choice following his impressive debut for Nigeria against Argentina.
His form this season with his club, Amkar Perm has been outstanding, Idowu has taken his club form to the international stage.
Tall, strong, and with great pace, Idowu is the ultimate marauding full back, who is as comfortable attacking than he is defending, but unlike Echiejille his defensive qualities are never under question.
Idowu scored a sensational goal for Nigeria on his debut against Argentina in a game the Super Eagles won 4-2.
Since then, he has gone from strength to strength in an Eagles shirt, and many believe that he was the man of the match in the last two friendly matches of the team, with his link up play with the forwards impressive.
For now Idowu will concentrate on his club, but with such good performances the world is set to be his oyster, and he is surely one of the first names on the list of players Gernot Rohr will take to Russia.
