Another sizzling weekend in the Nigeria Professional Football League as Kano Pillars close the gap between them and leaders to one point.
Pillars surged on the log with an impressive 3-1 win over Katsina United at the Sani Abacha Stadium.
The best highlight of the weekend was Abia Warriors’ 1-0 win at MFM FC.
At the bottom of the table, Sunshine Stars edged beleaguered Heartland 2-1.
There were some impressive individual performances so here are my choices.
Futbalgalore.com picks the top performers after the weekend matches.
Emmanuel Iwu [Akwa United]
Fantastic display by the former Heartland goalkeeper. His saves provided the Promise Keepers with the precious one point at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium in Enugu. He foiled Rangers attackers who fired from all angles especially in the second half.
Emmanuel Ariwachukwu [Akwa United]
He formed a formidable cog at the back with the Dennis Nya and Jamiu Alimi. He was very outstanding against Enugu Rangers. The lanky defender surged forward on any given occasion. Cleared his lines very well and covered a lot of area by standing in for his full-backs when they overlap.
Abiodun Adebayo [Abia Warriors]
The defender kept his lines very well at the back and ensured the Umuahia Warriors took three precious points from the Soccer Temple. Took control and organised his defence to keep the MFM attackers at bay as he made several timely interceptions, two of them in the last 10 minutes.
Samson Gbadebo [Rivers United]
The defender was exceptional at the back especially against an attacking Elkanemi side. Surged forward and curled in a lot of crosses with his powerful right foot and earned a couple of infringements with his lightening speed proving too difficult for the Desert Warriors defence.
Emeka Isaac [Abia Warriors]
The enterprising midfielder was full of life as he again proved the main man for the Umuahia Warriors. He also defended brilliantly throughout.
Ekene Awazie [FC Ifeanyi Ubah]
Awazie was the livewire of the away side and performed his duties at the middle of the park for the Anambra Warriors.
Stephen Alfred [Kwara United]
The former former FC Taraba man linked up play with team-mates Segun Alebiosu and Ifeanyi Okoye. He spent more time in the opposition area with his fearless style of play.
Ndifreke Effiong [Abia Warriors]
If Abia Warriors are hopeful of making an impact this season, then they are going to have to rely on Ndifreke’s wonderful craftsmanship. Was quiet exceptional last week against Rivers United. Set up several goal scoring chances as well as netting the match winning strike.
Bernard Ovoke [Rivers United]
The forward was very instrumental in Rivers United’s 1-1 draw at Elkanemi Warriors. His forays to the box gave the hosts all sorts of problems. He scored his team’s goal.
Seka Pascal [FC Ifeanyi Ubah]
The striker has never had a bad day this season. His figure is always a threat in every game and this was wasn’t an exception. Took on the Yobe Desert Stars defence on every given occasion and scored a very brilliant lob.
Junior Lokosa [Kano Pillars]
The attacker is in the form of his life. Pillars is now all about Lokosa who is gradually establishing himself as a potent attacker in the league. He struck a brace and accounted for an assist against Katsina United. Can’t be left out of any grounds with 18 goals this season.
