The 2018 FIFA World Cup will get underway on June 14th and we have picked our top 5 Super Eagles players to watch.
5. William Troost Ekong [Bursaspor]
The centre back will be at the heart of Nigeria’s defence alongside Leon Balogun.
Ekong a decent season with Bursaspor in the Turkish Super Lig.
A great leader in defence, Ekong will keep his defensive partners in shape, something that will be needed when they come up against the likes of Croatia, Iceland and Argentina.
A tough tackler, and great in the air, the ex Gent man has it all. He has plenty of style and guile to go with his strength.
4. Wilfred Ndidi [Leicester City]
The Leicester City midfielder can either operate in front of the back four, or as a playmaker, something that will be useful to coach Gernot Rohr with such a talented field of central midfielders in his squad to choose from.
Tough in the tackle, but also with great vision, Ndidi has all the qualities of a top international midfielder.
With heavy interest from Manchester United, Liverpool, Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspurs, Ndidi may use this tournament to showcase his talents ahead of his expected departure from Leicester City.
A born leader, with a never say die attitude, his qualities will be crucial to guide his side beyond the first round.
3. Odion Ighalo [Changchun Yatai]
Odion Ighalo has immense talent in front of goal, with great heading ability, and a cool finish, the attributes of a typical ‘number 9’ in the mold of Alan Shearer. Ighalo also has great pace, and his runs will be crucial in creating space for the on-rushing midfielders.
He will be determined to prove himself, and don’t bet against his name being top of the goalscoring charts come the end of the tournament.
2. Victor Moses [Chelsea]
Moses is a creative force that can turn a game at any moment. A Nigerian national team without him doesn’t feel like one that can do much, but with him and if he plays like he can, the Eagles can make a little run.
Plays with joy and craft, a master organizer and creator, there may be no smarter player in the Nigerian team like him.
If he can link up with Ighalo, Alex Iwobi, Moses Simon and Oghenekaro Etebo, like he did at Chelsea, Eagles’ opponents defences will not know what has hit them.
1. John Obi Mikel [Tianjin Teda]
What more is there to say about the Super Eagles skipper? He is the man that will always come to the party at crucial moments.
He netted two goals during the qualifiers and showed why he is the General in the team. Still improving and will carry a major burden at the heart of Nigeria’s midfield.
An elegant midfielder, Obi is happiest with the ball at his feet, with an ability to glide past opponents at ease, before playing a defence splitting pace to a striker.
When the tournament gets underway, sit back and enjoy watching these five terrific footballers in action, you will not be disappointed!
