The Super Eagles of Nigeria were forced to a 1-1 draw by DR Congo in a warm up game at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium on Monday.
As early as three minutes, debutant Simeon Nwankwo skillfully latched on to Ogenyi Onazi’s pass before prodding a screamer which came off the woodwork.
Benik Afobe was denied by the outstretched legs of goalkeeper Francis Uzoho in the seventh minute.
The three-time African champions raced in front when Onazi looped a free kick towards Kelechi Iheanacho but the ball somehow arrived at the path of William Troost Ekong who applied a composed finish.
The visitors should have levelled up late in the first half. Afobe was left completely unmarked in the box. He almost seemed shocked that he had so much time, though, and put the ball wide.
In the second half, Alex Iwobi, Mikel Agu, Ola Aina, Kenneth Omeruo and Ahmed Musa all got their fair share of action.
It was Simeon who went close as his brilliantly taken header was kept out by goalkeeper Anthony Mossi.
DR Congo were awarded a penalty kick when Ola Aina brought down Issama Mpeko. Replays showed the tackle took place outside the box.
Malango Ngita easily put away the spot kick as he sent Uzoho the wrong way.
