With only a game played by each country in group “D” of the on going Fifa World Cup in Russia, the sky is already looking cloudy for Nigeria’s Super Eagles who are languishing at the bottom of the table after losing 0-2 to Croatia in Kaliningrad while World Cup debutants, Iceland held mighty Argentina to a 1-1 draw.
The Eagles’ lack lustre performance has made concerned Nigerians to turn mathematicians again and the word “if”, seems to be the most used in their analysis.
Croatia is on top of the table with 3pts followed by Argentina and Iceland with a point each while Nigeria bring up the rear with no points at all.
So, if Nigeria beat Iceland and Argentina draw with Croatia, the Eagles, then with three points in their kitty, will have their fate in their hands in their last group game against Argentina and a draw against the South American giants could see them through. But if the Eagles draw with Iceland, they pray that Argentina do not triumph over Croatia.
However, if the Eagles lose to Iceland, ( did I hear you say, ” God forbid) they will be eliminated from the global soccer extravaganza even with a game to spare and the battle for the two tickets in group “D” will now be for their group opponents.
So, the Eagles must secure at least a draw against Iceland and hope other results go their way to have a chance of progressing to the second round.
