The Nigeria men’s national team earned 2-1 win over Liberia in Tuesday’s international friendly at the Samuel Kanyon Doe Sports Complex in Monrovia.
The match was in celebration of Liberian President, former World Footballer of the Year George Oppong Weah, whose iconic Jersey number 14 was retired tonight.
In 13 meetings between the two teams before today’s game, Nigeria had won eight against Liberia’s three.
Onyekuru had threatened twice in quick succession early in the game, shooting at the goalkeeper, before his second opening was stymied by the defenders.
Liberia did not heed those warning signs and, in the 19th minute, Onyekuru deservedly broke the deadlock. Onyekuru did the hard work, driving into the area
before volleying past the keeper.
Simeon Nwankwo made it 2-0 with a fantastic header.
Liberia reduced the tally from the penalty spot in the 90th minute.
Nigeria’s attention now turns to the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers against Libya in October.
