The number one gloves owner of the Super Eagles for the game against South Africa still remains a mystery.
Despite speculation and uncertainties, it appears former Warri Wolves and Heartland star, Daniel Akpeyi might get the nod.
The Chippa United goalkeeper looks set to start in goal for Nigeria when the Super Eagles visit Bafana Bafana at FNB Stadium on Saturday.
Nigeria, three-time Africa Cup of Nations winners were dealt a blow when number one shot-stopper Francis Uzoho, 20, was ruled out of the game against Bafana due to injury and was replaced by Enyimba’s Theophilus Afelokhai, who performed well for his club during their run to the CAF Confederation Cup semi-finals.
Ex Kano Pillars gloves man Afelokhai will be the third choice goalkeeper following a three-year absence, as Akpeyi and Ikechukwu Ezenwa fight for the number one jersey while Uzoho is away.
Akpeyi, 32, who was part of the 2018 FIFA World Cup squad, has been waiting for an opportunity to play and could get it in familiar territory.
The keeper has played 11 matches for the Chilli Boys in all competitions this season, keeping four clean sheets. The major concern will be that he has conceded 11 goals in as many games.
He was part of the Nigerian team that won a Bronze medal at the 2016 Olympic Games in Brazil.
