Former Nigeria junior international, Joshua Enaholo was the hero for visiting Abia Warriors as his star performance in goal for the Umuahia based side ensured his side ran away with the maximum points against home team, FC Ifeanyi Ubah in Nnewi.
The week six Oriental derby of the Nigeria Professional Football League group B, lived up to it’s billing as there was no dull moment throughout the encounter as Abia Warriors won 2-1 to end the home team’s unbeaten run in the league this season.
Action started as early as the 3rd minute when the home team raised the curtains through Emmanuel Ugwuka who rose highest to nod home an inviting cross from the ever impressive Eze Chibuikem.
The Anambra Warriors had opportunity of increasing their tally thereafter but Enaholo simply said no saving from Chibuikem, Skipper Chijioke Alaekwe and Promise James.
As Abia Warriors raised their game, striker, Obi Samson then ghosted past two Ifeanyi Ubah defenders, Charles Okafor and Chukwujekwu Onuoha before rounding up keeper, Anozie Chinedu for the equaliser in first half injury time as the Anambra Warriors conceded a goal for the first time this season.
Before today’s game, Anozie, who spent seven seasons with Abia Warriors before moving to Nnewi this season, was the in-form goalkeeper in the league having not conceded a goal in five previous games but then his former team mates from Umuahia forced him to pick the ball twice from his net in one game after Shedrack Asiegbu rifled home from outside the box for what later proved to be the winner.
Stand-in captain, Charles Okafor had the opportunity to salvage a point for his side when the centre Referee, Shuaibu Abdullahi awarded a penalty to them when he adjudged Enaholo to had brought down Nonso Nzediegwu in the area.
The Abia Warriors number one, who had made several world class saves earlier, capped a star performance by parrying Okafor’s spot kick to safety.
There was a late surge by the home team in search of the equaliser but Abia Warriors held on to record their first away win of the season and move four places to 6th on the group B table.
Abia Warriors will be engage in another Oriental war when they host Heartland of Owerri on Wednesday.
