Anefiok Godspower inspired Akwa United to a 1-0 victory over 10-man Yobe Desert Stars at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium on Sunday.
The former Etoile du Sahel midfielder forward struck in the first minute boosting the Promise Keepers’ bid to finish in first place in Group B.
Aniefiok Godspower made the very best of a clever pass from Ndifreke Effiong by beating Terkaa Melai less than one minute to kickoff.
Akwa enjoyed possession for long spells earlier in the game and were unlucky when Mfon Udoh’s effort hit the upright.
The Desert Stars’ best chance fell to Philip Auta from the penalty spot. The winger was denied by agile goalkeeper Ojo Olorunleke.
United were also awarded their own spot kick in the second stanza. The busy
Mfon picked out Aniefiok Godspower in the box but the lanky midfielder was brought down.
Mfon was denied by the alert Melai from the spot.
The busy Mfon also had another long on-goal attempt saved by Desert Stars keeper, Melai who impressed further with a smart save.
Stars were reduced to 10 men when
Yanmar Moses fouled Wisdom Fernando and received his second yellow card of the match.
Both teams showed intent to win but United’s commitment saw them carry the day at the Nest of Champions.
