Enugu Rangers forward Felix Ogbuke scored deep into the second half to allow his side to beat Bendel Insurance 1-0 at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium on Wednesday.
The Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) week 20 game generated much pre-match hype.
It was difficult even for the speedy Rangers players to break down the well organised defensive pattern of the Benin Arsenal.
Rangers substitute Felix Ogbuke got the goal in the 85th minute. His cross evaded everyone in the box before nestling in the back of the net to give Gbenga Ogunbote’s men all three points on offer.
The Flying Antelopes could well have got on to the score sheet in the 16th minute of the first half, Ibrahim Ajani’s attempt from close range clipped the crossbar.
Insurance’s Osarenkhoe spotted Rangers goalkeeper Japhet Opubo off his line and aimed his attempt at goal. The keeper got back in time to save.
Ajani then peeled off his marker and got his head on Ifeanyi Egwim’s corner kick but directed it off target.
Ogbuke was the man Rangers counted for the winning goal.
The win was Rangers’ 11th league victory, and took them to 37 points from 20 matches.
Insurance, on 25 points from 20 games, take on Rivers United at the Yakubu Gowon Stadium on Sunday.
