If you have been keeping up with Super Falcons recent results you would have seen that hot prospect Uchenna Kanu netted 10 goals during the 2019 WAFU Women’s Cup of Nations in Cote d’Ivoire.
She has been rewarded with a place in the team’s provisional squad to the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup in France.
It just shows how much talent and confidence the young player has.
A quick flashback to the career of Kanu in the past. As a 15-year-old in 2013, she was the defender’s nightmare in the colours of Pelican Stars. The tricky player went to score a total of 9 goals in 10 appearances for Stars, including a brilliant hat trick against Tokas Queens at Alade Stadium. The Nigeria Women’s Premier League game ended 6-0 in favour of the Calabar based side.
Kanu was selected to play for Nigeria at the 2014 FIFA U17 Women’s Cup and was the African side’s best player of the tournament, netting three goals.
Her majestic form was good enough for a place in the U20 team in 2014, as the Patience Okaeme captained side finished in second place.
Kanu’s stint at Delta Queens was also eventful with 10 goals in 19 appearances
She joined Southeastern University mid-season 2016 after another stellar campaign with Delta Queens.
Kanu’s goalscoring form inspired Southeastern University to back-to-back conference championships and the NAIA National Championship Tournament successes.
She is capable of playing on the wing or in a more centrally-attacking position, and will feature with more prominence at the FIFA Women’s World Cup in France.
Kanu, who is an ex Delta Queens attacker, has been attracting big name clubs for her tremendous performances for Southeastern University.
In her first collegiate season, she scored 13 goals in 10 games and was named Sun Conference Newcomer of the Year. The following year, she managed an absurd 45 goals in 21 games, earning her Sun Conference Player of the Year. Southeastern also won the Sun Conference championship.
Joining Pensacola FC for the 2018 WPSL season, Kanu made an immediate impact. She scored twice in her debut against Alabama FC and scored a hat trick in June against Baton Rouge United. Uchenna Kanu finished the regular season with 10 goals in seven matches, and had four matches with two or more goals scored.
In Pensacola FC’s first playoff match against Chattanooga FC, Kanu stole the show with a five goal performance en route to a 6-2 Pensacola win.
Uchenna Kanu brought home several Player of the Week awards, and was named Gulf Conference Offensive Player of the Year for 2018. Since returning to Southeastern University for the 2018/19 collegiate season, Kanu bagged 57 goals in 24 matches.
Having represented Nigeria at several youth levels, Kanu will be hoping to be included in the Super Falcons team to France 2019.
Who knows where she will end up but one thing is for certain and that is that she is going to go a long way in her career and she will most likely be playing in any elite league in future.
