Super Eagles star Alex Iwobi climbed off the bench to net a sublime goal as Arsenal lost 4-1 to London rivals Chelsea at the Baku Olympic Stadium in the UEFA Europa League final on Wednesday night, reports Futbalgalore.com.
The Arsenal Academy product becomes the first Nigerian to Europa League final.
Following a goalless first half in Azerbaijan, the all-English affair burst into life after the restart with five goals being scored.
Olivier Giroud opened the scoring against his former side with a swooping header, Pedro added a second and Eden Hazard made it 3-0 from the penalty spot in a calamitous opening 20 minutes to the second half for Arsenal.
The Gunners were given some temporary hope when Iwobi scored a sublime goal two minutes after coming off the bench, but Hazard doubled his tally for the evening to sign off in style in what was billed as being his final game in a Chelsea shirt – something he all but confirmed in the post-match celebrations.
The form of Iwobi in the final will gladden the heart of Super Eagles boss Gernot Rohr who sees the tricky as being central to his plans at the 2019 African Cup of Nations in Egypt.
