Former Golden Eaglets forward Victor Osimhen has been named in coach Gernot Roger’s squad for the 2019 AFCON in Egypt. However, Rohr has finally been convinced of his abilities after watching him train with the team in a non residential camping here in Asaba. He got the chance to prove his mettle in a friendly against Zimbabwe on Saturday.
Ebere Paul Onuachu gets shock place in Nigeria’s squad
Midtjylland striker Ebere Paul Onuachu has been included in Nigeria’s squad for the Africa Cup of Nations. On 26 March 2019, Onuachu scored his first goal for the Nigerian team in a friendly match against Egypt. The goal was scored within the first ten seconds of the game, and the fastest ever scored for Nigeria. He has showed great prospect at the club and his inclusion do not surprise many.
Out of sorts Kelechi Iheanacho dropped from Africa Cup of Nations squad
Off form Kelechi Iheanacho has failed to make Nigeria’s Africa Cup of Nations squad. The Leicester City forward who joined the team to train during their non-residential training failed to impress coach Rohr. Many expected him to be in the team but the Franco-German trainer think otherwise. The coach has stunned many with his decision to drop Iheanacho who was normally seen as an alternative to Odion Ighalo. But it is obvious that his poor form at Leicester is something the gaffer trainer is unhappy with. The striker struggled in the 2018/19 season as he managed just one goal for the Foxes.
Rohr names just one player from NPFL for AFCON
Nigeria coach Gernot Rohr has named just one player from the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) for the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations. Katsina United goalkeeper Ikechukwu Ezenwa is the only player to have made the 23-man team.
Rotherham United ace Semi Ajayi dropped from Nigeria’s Africa Cup of Nations squad
England based striker defender Semi Ajayo has failed to make Rohr’s 23-man team for the Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt. Ajayi despite impressing at Rotherham United last season where he emerged as the club’s second top scorer could not make the team. He was part of the team that went through a six-day non residential training in Asaba.
Hugely talented Spain-based youngster Samuel Chukwueze set to thrill Africa Cup of Nations
Talented Spain-based winger Samuel Chukwueze has been included in Nigeria’s squad for this month’s Africa Cup of Nations in Spain. Chukwueze who plays his club football for Villarreal has fully established himself as an important member of their first-team squad, making 40 appearances, and scoring eight goals in the process. He has been linked with Arsenal, Barcelona and Liverpool.
Chelsea defender Kenneth Omeruo to feature in second AFCON
Defender Kenneth Omeruo has been included in Nigeria’s 2019 Africa Cup of Nations squad. This is the second time he will be at Africa’s showpiece The player is expected to hand a strong competition to Brighton defender Leon Balogun. He made 35 appearances on loan at Leganes in the 2018/19 campaign.
