Goalkeeper Ojo Olorunleke says Akwa United are still focused in winning the Nigerian Professional Football League (NPFL) title despite yesterday’s 3-3 draw against Enugu Rangers.
The Promise Keepers took the lead just three minutes into the second stanza as Cyril Olisema steeled his nerves to convert a spot kick after the referee spotted a handball incident.
The day grew from bad to worse for the ‘Flying Antelopes’ as its defense lynchpin, Isiaka Oladuntoye was shown a straight red card on 61 minutes but to their credit, the remaining players took the game to their opponent and three minutes later were on level terms as Chiamaka Madu connected home an Ugwu Uwadiegwu’ curly free kick from the edge of the box.
Michael Uchebo scored two quick goal within five minutes off assists from Bobby Clement on 68 and 73 minutes to send the teaming supporters of the club into a frenzy.
However, just few minutes to the end of regulation time, Dennis Nya ensured that the Uyo side earned a share of the spoils as he rose highest to bundle past a stranded Nana Bonsu on 87 minutes off an Mfom Udoh’ free kick while also been responsible for the back breaking equalizing goal on 90+5 minutes as he nodded in a corner kick from Cyril Olisema.
Speaking immediately after the match, Olorunleke said though he is not happy he conceded three goals but congratulated his teammates for the good fight at the Soccer Temple.
“Let me start by saying thank God for the outcome of the game, for the good fight we put up. About the goals, I wasn’t happy. But then when we win, we win together, when we loose we loose together. Our focus is to win the league because it’s still open.”
“The boys showed bravery, I kept on telling them, we should never give up, the mistake we did is what they did at the tail end of the match.”
The 2017 Aiteo Cup winner who has never lost a match at the Soccer Temple with the different teams he’s has played for said the next match against Lobi Stars is an important match as he and his teammates will give their utmost to get the maximum points.
“The game against Lobi Stars will not be an easy one, so we will take it seriously as the league is still out target”.
Meanwhile, Kano Pillars tops the table with 7 points, Enyimba are second with 6 points, Akwa United are placed 3rd on 5 points, Rangers are 5th with 4 points and FC Ifeanyi Ubah are rock bottom with no point.
