The Aiteo Cup lived up to its so-called “giant-killing” reputation on Wednesday when Enyimba, Nasarawa United, Sunshine Stars and Wikki Tourists were eliminated by lower-league opposition on a day of round of 32 shocks in Nigeria’s oldest knockout competition.
Six of the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) sides were ousted on a classic Aiteo Cup day, with recently crowned NPFL champions Enyimba shocked 3-2 by non league team Smart City in the biggest surprise of them all.
It was a ‘Black Wednesday’ for the NPFL teams. Every year you can see this kind of shocks in the Aiteo Cup.
A virtually full-strength Akwa United lost 3-0 to Rivers United at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium. They were both all NPFL teams.
Nasarawa United lost 1-0 to second-tier Aklosendi in another round of 32 stunner.
Umuahia based Abia Warriors deservedly zoomed past Gateway United with a 2-0 win thanks to goals from Paul Samson and Atilola Abdulsalami Tunde.
Wikki Tourists were taken to penalties by Rovers FC after drawing 1-1 with the former winning 2-4 in the shootouts.
Star studded Katsina United were embarrassingly defeated 2-0 by Shooting Stars.
In another upset, EFCC FC arrested Sunshine Stars and won 1-0.
As it stands, only three NPFL teams are assured of being in the round 16. Four games will be played on Thursday.
On a day of amazing results, Bendel Insurance beat Ekiti United 4-2.
