Futbalgalore.com runs the rule over the performance of Gernot Rohr’s men at the Alexandria Stadium on Wednesday afternoon as the Super Eagles posted a 1-0 win over the Syli Nationale of Guinea to reach the round 16 of the 2019 AFCON.
Defender Kenneth Omeruo claimed his first international goal with a fabulous header from a Moses Simon cross in the 73rd minute.
The Chelsea defender was the standout player for the three-time champions who are gunning for their fourth title.
Meanwhile, Leicester City’s Wilfred Ndidi continues to establish himself in midfield with an all-conquering display.
Daniel Akpeyi GOALKEEPER (6.5/10)
Produced a wonderful stop to deny Ibrahima Cisse to atone for his earlier troubles. He stopped a goal-bound effort from François Kamano but his weakness of indecision surfaced early in the first-half.
Chidozie Awaziem RIGHT-BACK (6.5/10)
Employed his pace and energy to defend the steadily anytime the Guineans decided to use his side of defence to launch an attack. He enjoyed considerable success defending against the Ibrahima Traore and Co.
Ola Aina LEFT-BACK (7/10)
The Torino man performed overly well. He was always a terror whenever he burst forward.
Leon Balogun CENTER-BACK (6.5/10)
Alert and confident. Matched Kamano in strong aerial tussles. Marshaled the backline expertly with Omeruo anytime Guinea went on the attack.
Kenneth Omeruo CENTER-BACK (8/10)
Covered aces of space to shorten create chances in midfield and pushed the Guineans back. Efficiently mobile and intelligent to limit Guinea’s chances upfront. Announced his presence with a fabulous header from a delirious cross from Moses Simon.
Wilfred Ndidi DEFENSIVE MIDFIELD (7.5/10)
Tasked to provide a defensive shield for the back four and link the defence to the attacking sect in transition. And he discharged that with an awesome vision.
Oghenekaro Etebo CENTRAL MIDFIELD (6.5/10)
The Stoke City man was busy offering support to Ndidi and Iwobi at the middle of the park. He rarely gave the ball away and was assured.
Alex Iwobi OFFENSIVE MIDFIELD (7/10)
Great distributor of the ball. Embarked on a string of forays which created panicking moments for the Malian midfield. Technically used his strength to defend whenever required.
Moses Simon RIGHT-WING (7/10)
Deserves a lot of credit for the winning goal as he delivered a fine cross which was headed home by Kenneth Omeruo.
Ahmed Musa LEFT-WING (6.5/10)
Troubled Mikael Dyrestam on the flanks in the early minutes though the full back tried to out-muscle him out of the game. In one instant he picked the pocket of the defender and slit the ball for Odion Ighalo who failed to punish the opposition.
Odion Ighalo FORWARD (5/10)
Missed Nigeria’s first real chance of the game after firing wide from a Moses Simon sweet cross. The Shanghai Shenhua star had an average game by his usual high standard.
Samuel Chukwueze (5/10)
Replaced Iwobi and showed flashes of his quality.
