South Africa gaffer Stuart Baxter has tipped the Super of Eagles as one of the favourites to win the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), reports Futbalgalore.com.
William Troost-Ekong’s late strike sent Nigeria into the semi-finals of the Africa Cup of Nations at the expense of South Africa on Wednesday night.
The Udinese centre-back struck in the 89th minute to seal a 2-1 win at the Cairo International Stadium.
Samuel Chukwueze opened the scoring for Nigeria in the first half only for Bongani Zungu to level in the second half after VAR intervened.
“It’s difficult when you’ve lost in the dying minutes, it’s difficult to find positives. I’m sure that in one week’s time I will find some positives. At this moment I’m finding it very difficult,” Baxter said during the Post Match Conference.
“I thought in the first half we weren’t brave enough to get on the ball in tight spaces and to press higher. In the second half, we tried to do that better and we managed to get a more mobile possession which gave Nigeria more problems, but we still couldn’t find that last strike on goal to get there.
“Nigeria were always dangerous. They were really well organized, they had good players. But congrats to Gernot Rohr and his team, I’m sure they’ll be one of the teams fighting for the trophy at the end.”
The Super Eagles will play Ivory Coast or Algeria in the semi-finals in Cairo on Sunday.
