Barcelona are ready to revive their long-term interest in Bayern Munich wing-back David Alaba.
As a very versatile player, Alaba has played in a multitude of roles, including central midfield, central defence, right and left wing, but has since blossomed as a left-back.
Mundo Deportivo says Barca are turning to the Austria star after being frustrated in negotiations with Real Betis for Junior Firpo.
Barca had seen Firpo as cover for Jordi Alba, though Betis’ price is deemed too steep for a player who would not be a first-choice.
Instead, Barca are now ready to spend bigger money on a player who can compete directly with player of Nigerian descent Alaba for a first team place.
Alaba, 27, fits the bill and Barca are now preparing an offer for the wing-back.
The defender has rejected new contract talks with Bayern and has seen his status come under threat with the arrival of Lucas Hernandez from Atletico Madrid.
Born in Vienna to a Filipino mother and Nigerian father, Alaba had been eligible to represent the Super Eagles before he became cap-tied to his country of birth, Austria.
The versatile player trained with the Nigeria U17s which contained the likes of Lukman Haruna, Macauley Chrisantus and Rabiu Ibrahim ahead of the tournament in South Korea and impressed during the training camp. He was dropped from the train to Korea.
A six-time Austrian Footballer of the Year, Alaba has earned 64 caps for Austria, scoring 13 goals and represented the country at the 2016 European Championship.
27-year-old David Alaba has been on the payroll of Bayern Munich since 2008.
