Vitória Guimarães SC have signed midfielder Mikel Agu on a free transfer, reports Futbalgalore.com.
The 26-year-old was on the books of Porto since 2011 and made only two appearances for the first team in the Primeira Liga.
He inked a three-year deal that will keep him at the Estádio D. Afonso Henriques until June 2022.
Guimarães SC have become the holder of 50% of Agu’s economic rights. The contract also includes a termination clause in the amount of €10 million.
The former Club Brugge player, 26, becomes the Conquerors’ 18th signing after Aziz, Ibrahim Blati Touré, Lucas Soares, Valerii Bondarenko, Edmond Tapsoba, Nuninho, Al Musrati, André Almeida, João Correia, Romain Correia, Miguel Reisinho, Óscar Estupiñán, Marcos Valente, João Vigário, Tyler Boyd, Kiko and Víctor García.
Agu’s style of play can be likened to former Chelsea player John Obi Mikel. He received the nickname “Mikel” from fans in Benin City, where he grew up, due to similarities in movement and overall play. He has an excellent close-control and has shown a very good passing range, complementing this with the vision to play long balls from the back. On occasion, he has shown the ability to control the tempo of the game. Defensively, he shows good anticipation and does not rush into his tackles, positioning himself just in front of the back four.
He had loan spells at Club Brugge and Vitória de Setúbal in his career.
