Following the Olympic Eagles 5-0 victory over Sudan in the U23 AFCON qualifier, Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) 1st Vice President Barrister Seyi Akinwunmi has praised the cohesion in the team.
The highly revered administrator made the ceremonial kickoff at the 2019 Governor Okowa Cup Tourney at the Stephen Keshi Stadium on Wednesday.
“Honestly, it was a very impressive match, putting aside whether their opponents lacked strength or not,” the Lagos FA Chairman said at a Press Conference attended by Futbalgalore.com on Wednesday.
“Watching our play, the cohesion amongst the players and speed with which they turned defenses to attack was very impressive. I have a lot of hope and faith in that team I must say.
Six home based players were in action for the Olympic Eagles in the massacre of Sudan and they were outstanding. It further fueled calls for more involvement of home lads in the Super Eagles team.
He remarked: “I do not belief in the issue of home based or foreign based. I keep on emphasizing on this, if you’re good, you’re good regardless of where you play and if a coach is discerning, he can see a player in what ever League he plays in and choose him. I think what the coaching crew did was choose the best players that they could find and are available and worked with.”
“For me I think it is derogatory the way we refer to the home based players. It’s not like they are not literally home based, for me personally I don’t like the term because it sounds like some form of low ranking, they are very good players, they played in the national team and are fantastic.
The Grassroot Developer praised the impact of Delta State Governor, His Excellency Ifeanyi Arthur Okowa for supporting the national teams and also accepting to sponsor the 2019 Gov Okowa Pre Season Tourney in Asaba.
“It takes a man with big heart in these times to host the national team and to host back to back events, which includes the pre-season tournament. It is very important that we honour Governor Okowa, appreciate and let him know that we love what he is doing for us and we are not taking it for granted. He is a good man and we hold him in very high esteem,” he concluded.
