Super Eagles B of Nigeria on Saturday crashed out of the 2020 African Nations Championship (CHAN) on a 3-4 aggregate in spite of beating Hawks B of Togo.
The 2018 CHAN runners up beat the Togolese side 2-0 in the second leg match of the play off round.
But they still crashed out to the Togolese side who had earlier won the first leg 4-1 in Lome.
Futbalgalore.com reports that Nigeria went on the offensive from the opening minute of the return leg played at the Agege Stadium in Lagos.
The home team scored in the 8th minute of the game through Sikiru Alimii to set the tone for an interesting game.
Former First Bank and Warri Wolves forward Sikiru Alimi put the Eagles ahead in the 8th minute.
The Eagles missed gilt edged chances to seal their place in Cameroon 2020.
Alimi had another chance, but his effort was saved by the Togolese keeper.
The Lobi Stars striker should have increased the lead for Nigeria. He went close in a goalmouth scramble, with the goalkeeper beaten, his goal bound effort was cleared off the line.
Livewire Ibrahim Sunusi went close with another well taken effort as Nigeria pressed for the second goal.
Sunusi, 17, saw his header off a long throw from Daniel James go inches off target as first ended 1-0 in favour of Nigeria.
Nigeria who needed two more goals continued to bombard the Hawks in the second stanza.
Bulky striker Nyima Nwagua’s header went inches off target in the 58th minute.
Fourteen minutes later, Alimi doubled the Eagles’ lead.
All efforts by the Eagles to score thereafter proved abortive as the Hawks defended tenaciously and deployed delay tactics.
