MFM FC caused a huge upset with a 1-0 victory at Okigwe Township Stadium to silence Heartland on Sunday.
The Lagos side had lost its last visit 1-0 on 20th March 2016, but this proved to be their first win at Heartland and inevitably the home stars were jeered off the field.
The Olukoya Boys have been revolutionised with the departure of top stars like Chijioke Akuneto, Austin Opara, Julius Emiloju, Abisoye Olawale, Zikiye Jonathan and Emmanuel Nasamu.
It was an emotional game for coach Fidelis Ilechukwu who faced his former club for the first time after leaving them for Heartland at the end of last season.
Akuneto returned to face his former club. Emiloju was named amongst the substitutes.
There was an early scare after 12 minutes when Adeniji Kabiru’s sweet header hit the upright.
An audacious strike from Akuneto was smothered away by goalkeeper Folarin Abayomi. The shot stopper was at his best to produce another save from Joseph Onoja’s wicked effort.
However, it was MFM who opened the scoring moments later. A corner was whipped in for Ogwu Clement’s towering header from six yards that left Ikechukwu Ezewna rooted to the spot.
Before the break Folarin was tested by a deflected Chinedu Ohanachom effort and Christian Pyagbara snapshot.
Michael Mbono was given his MFM debut after 59 minutes, replacing Balogun Alade.
Heartland were convinced they had equalised on 66 minutes, but this time Folarin incredibly managed to parry from point-blank range on to the inside of the post and keep his wits about him to grab the ricochet. It was a remarkable save to deny Onoja.
Folarin Abayomi produced another big save as he gathered Leonard Ugochukwu’s header from close range.
The former Nasarawa United and Enyimba forward again threatened in stoppages, but his effort was well held.
